If you’re in your home, exercising to fitness DVD’s, is it STILL mandatory to wear sneakers? Why?

I want to know if it would do any harm if I exercised on carpet with just my socks on b/c my sneakers rub against my toes & create corns & calluses. I mean, I’m going to be doing cardio salsa aerobics.

they say you should. i don’t know exactly why- maybe due to spraining an ankle, but don’t worry about it. people do salsa in heels!! i never wear shoes when i exercise

Well, if you are doing cardio then it is best to have a firm support for your toe. Also, a good shoe keeps you balanced. You don’t want to be getting some black feet/toes.

Also in my gym that I own I require the proper shoes and attire be worn…. don’t want anybody having a weight fall down and break their toes or do some permanent structural damage to any of their tissue organs.

Is it mandatory to wear sneakers at home while exercising? No, it is your home and only you can decided what is mandatory.

On the other hand, wearing sneakers that properly fit and support your feet is (IMHO) only common sense.

Your solution is to get sneakers that (A) properly fit and (B) have great support and feel comfortable.

When I started working out I got two pairs specifically for working out. Why two pairs? Sneakers need time to recover. Specifically they need time to air out and for the foam in the insoles to return to their original form (or as close as they can return to it). I worked out three times a week and two pairs were enough, as each pair got at least 4 days recovery time.

If you are working out daily, I’d get at least three pairs in order to give each their own rest period.

What should you do and/or know when going to get your workout sneakers?

    1) You should have someone fit your feet for length and width. This time around don’t buy off the Internet or go to a store that doesn’t have someone to help you. Find a store where the people have time and the knowledge to fit your feet.

    2) Ask questions so you can learn about fitting your feet in the future. This way you can carry forward the knowledge.

    3) When to replace? Don’t look at the bottoms of the sneakers. You should look at the insides of the sneakers as that is where your feet live. Once the inside foam fails to bounce back when you press down on it, it is time to replace the sneaker.

Sneakers won’t last forever. I’d say at most you can expect sneakers to last as many years as you have sneakers (for that activity). If you get three pairs, then more than likely the sneakers will last three years.

    4) You don’t need to get all two or three pairs to be the same. Look at your exercising plans and try to get sneakers for these various routines. By this I mean, you’ll want to get cross-trainers for general type of exercising. For running you’ll want running sneakers, etc.

Have an idea before you go to buy the sneakers of what your workout plan will be like so the salesperson can offer the best possible choices for you.

In my case, I went with two pairs of Adidas Cross Trainers and two pairs of New Balance running shoes / sneakers.

Yeah, and they did last me three plus years. Your workout shoes are NOT fashion — IMHO — they are there to protect your feet and make it so you can work out. They are functional and not fashion sneakers.
