Where do you draw the line between self-improvement and accepting yourself as you are?
March 6th, 2010 | by admin |How do you know what personal qualities can be worked on and what you just have to live with?
Please no God/Jesus/religious answers.
There is no line.
In order to self-improve you HAVE to accept who you are, otherwise what you’re doing is trying to stick an upside down triangle block to a foundational rectangle block, if you’ll permit me to use LEGO as a visual reference.

Well. The personal qualities that should be worked on in my opinion is when it is negative and effects you and those who have to deal with you. If it is something that makes a big negative impact in your life, it should be worked out..but if it is something that expresses who you are as a person and you are willing to not work on it, then you shouldn’t feel bad when others don’t care for it. It is basically a give and take thing.

Sometimes I think: "Forget it, this is how I am." and sometimes I think, "Well, I guess I can push the envelope on it." IMO preferences for things being a certain way can be worked on, while solid character traits are going to be much more difficult and I would probably throw up my hands.

I think it is like when Dr. Phil says "How’s that working for you?" If you have a behavior and it isn’t working for you, you may consider changing it. I once worked for a man who bankrupted 10 businesses. He had it in his mind that his way was right, and the only way to run a company, yet he failed every business he ran. So it would appear that maybe his way wasn’t such a good way of doing business.

Work on the ones that can hurt others or yourself. For example. I have accepted that I am a loud talker, I have tried to curb my gossiping. I accept the fact that I am always going to be 10 lbs. overweight, I have stopped smoking because it is bad for my health and a bad example to my kids.

I don’t think there are any aspects of ourselves that we ‘just have to live with’, with the exception of physical traits that we cannot change, such as height. I think the answer to your question lies in a poster I saw at my local gym. It said "Be yourself, only better". We all have limitations to our talents and abilities e.g. I will never be a scratch golfer, but I can still continue to improve and play the best game I am capable of playing. We can all outplay ourselves if we really try. The continual desire for improvement however should not stop us accepting ourselves as worthwhile but flawed human beings who are just fine the way we are. What we are aiming to do is improve our performance capabilities in certain areas, not change ourselves as people; and in that is the distinction you are looking for I think.
